Multiple Sclerosis can be Fabulous!

When people think of Multiple Sclerosis, they usually picture struggle, limitation, and frustration but, my mom has shown me something completely different: even with MS, you can still shine. Multiple Sclerosis comes with balance issues, and unfortunately for my mom, she heavily relies on a cane to walk. However, a cane doesn't have to be boring accessory that reminds you of a disability. My mom has a few beautiful ornate canes. She treats them like fashion accessories, with sparkly crystal studded handles, bold colors, and custom designs. She says they make her feel special, not sick.

Seeing her live like that makes me feel better too. When she picks up her fancy cane and walks out the door with confidence, it reminds me that MS doesn’t define her or our family. It’s not just a medical condition in our house; it’s part of our story, one she decorates with sparkle and strength. Just like having your favorite dress or fancy shoes saved for a special occasion, my mom often trades out her dull grey walking stick for a glamorous studded wooden cane.

For her, it's not about pretending everything’s fine; it’s about finding ways to make life feel yours again and a refusal to let MS dull her shine. I love this trait in my mom and I believe anybody can potentially apply this positive attitude in their lives.

Instead of letting MS take the light out of her life, she adds glamour to it. It’s not about pretending the hard parts don’t exist, but about saying, “Yeah, I’ve got MS, and I’m still fabulous.”

Maybe that’s the real secret: turning something tough into something that still feels beautiful and glamorous.
